About religion
The first thing to understand about religion is that it is not about the existence of God.   The existence of God can not be proven one way or the other and is truly a matter of personal belief and intuition.   Religion is about the explanation of God and that's where all the trouble starts.

Consider for a moment a being so advanced and so complex that it can create the whole Universe as we know it and every single organism on this and every other planet.   Now consider that, at least for the moment, our physical science believes that the Universe is flat and extends forever (technically not FOREVER but close enough for this discussion) and that their are an infinite NUMBER of universes laying on top of each other.   Let's do the math on that.   Infinite size of our universe times an infinite number of universes is ...   um ...   add the 6, carry the 3 ....   a BUTTLOAD of universes!

The answer is that it's an unexplainable number and that's just the NUMBER ...   not the complexity of the components, the time required or the effort.   So, if the sheer NUMBERS are incomprehensible then if stands to reason that the reasons BEHIND the numbers are inexplicable too.   It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to see that it's a limitation of our minds that we can't explain it, but mankind doesn't like the idea of being limited, so we try ..   and religion is the result of that effort.

Is there a higher power in the Universe? Of course there is, it would be the height of arrogance to assume we are IT.   Equally arrogant would to be believe that any power or being that is complex enough to the Universe that we know and all the things in it would be enough like US that we could even understand.   The ancient Chinese believed that what we know as eclipses were angry dragons eating the sun (talk about heartburn!), but we know now that isn't the case.   Were the Chinese stupid or did they merely explain what they saw using the most rational terms they could think of?

Or ......   have you ever had a conversation with an ant? Did the ant understand? {Editor's note: Keep your Ant Talking PRIVATE - there are people who'd think you were crazy} Moreover, if you DID communicate with the ant, what would you speak ABOUT? The ant is, theoretically, completely unable to grasp what you are, what you want, or concepts that you bring up.   And would the ant then try to tell the other ants? Do they HAVE any insane asylums? More likely the ant would tell the others that it heard and saw the Power Ant in Ant Heaven.   Put it terms that ANTS understand.

Do we do the same thing? Do we try to comprehend an incomprehensible Universe in terms WE could understand?

In other words ....   Did we create God is Man's Image?

pretty arrogant of us, if we did.   Well guess what? We DID.

The Bible that Western culture typically uses in it's belief system is correctly known as the King James version because King James of England took the source documents and revised the contents mercilessly in favor of what he believed was what he wanted the people to believe.   So The Bible isn't The Bible at all.   At the very most, it's the Word of God as told to a handful of people thousands of years ago, handed down verbally like the game of telephone, until someone finally wrote it down, only to have King James go "nope - that's out, Change this to say THAT, add this paragraph here, etc.   If you take a week to bone up on Ancient Aramaic (does Berlitz teach that?) and get yourself a copy of the Dead Sea Scrolls (check Amazon.com) and about a thousand other documents, you MIGHT find out what John really said, and it's possible that what he said is "No, Paul isn't dead, he just writes really sappy songs."

On another happy note, the World religions have never been happy with any sort of scientific advances.   As the science of astronomy advanced, the Pope of the day said, categorically, that the idea that the Earth revolved around the sun was and had to be totally false! His explanation was that for the Earth to revolve around the sun and not be the center of the universe would mean that the entire foundation of the Church was false.

The Jews, Arabs and Christians all believe in the same God.   Not that there is ONE God, but the actual SAME GOD, Abraham's God, known to Jews as Jehovah, Arabs as Allah and Christians as Yahweh.   {didn't know God HAD a Christian name, did you?}.   The big disagreement is who's Prophet you believe.

God used to me a micro-managing, chatty, hands-on manager until about 1800 years ago.   Since then it seems He's more of a "sleep on it and work it out for yourself" kind of God.   Not a lot of burning bushes or oceans subsiding since then.   On the other hand, no one has come up with an alternative explanation to the 1969 New York Mets, either.

Another theory to Creationism, equally valid, is that we, our Earth and the Universe as we know it is some higher being's High School Biology experiment ...   and we didn't get all that high a grade.

For the closest truth that mortals will ever get to religion and the meaning of life, read "Conversations with God" by Neale Donald Walsch and take a first step into a larger existence.
